Explore the intersection of art, history, and healing at the renowned Historic Circle Gallery—Maryland’s oldest non-profit gallery, proudly supporting and celebrating creatives for over half a century. Featuring captivating works from Engle’s Booty and the visionary Sasha More, this After Dark MFA Show is set to illuminate both past and future artistic legacies.

Annapolis, Maryland, renowned for its colonial charm and strategic location on the Chesapeake Bay, serves as a historic backdrop for the Maryland Federation of Art. Founded in 1963, MFA’s Circle Gallery stands as a key venue for showcasing artistic talent, bridging the city’s rich history with contemporary art. The Maryland Federation of Art plays a pivotal role in fostering artistic expression within a city steeped in historical significance. Located in Annapolis, a city that has been a major port and colonial center, MFA benefits from a backdrop that enhances its mission to merge historical context with modern creativity. MFA’s upcoming After Dark exhibition, running from October 31st to November 23rd, 2024, invites artists from the USA, Canada, and Mexico to present works inspired by twilight. This exhibition reflects MFA’s commitment to diversity and aims to showcase a wide range of interpretations on the theme of dusk.

My artwork, ” Engle’s Booty One” , honors Richard Engle, an early settler and prominent figure in Annapolis’s development. The term “booty,” historically used to describe treasure or valuable goods, refers here to Engle’s accumulated wealth and contributions to the city’s growth. His construction of Engle’s Tavern, a significant colonial landmark, symbolizes the prosperity that helped shape Annapolis. The word also hints at the city’s connection to the Chesapeake Bay, a region historically known for piracy and naval activity, further enriching the artwork’s historical context. Engle’s Booty One also reflects my personal journey through mental illness recovery.

Twilight in the piece represents the transition from struggle to serenity, capturing the complexities of healing through its balance of light and shadow.

I am grateful for the Maryland Federation of Art for including my work in this significant exhibition. After Dark not only celebrates artistic talent, but also honors Annapolis’s historical roots. The exhibition provides a platform to explore how twilight and personal experiences intersect with the city’s rich history. Join us from October 31st to November 23rd, 2024, at MFA’s Circle Gallery to experience After Dark. This exhibition offers direct engagement with both artistic innovation and historical significance.
